El cuadro de Édouard Manet representando cuatro figuras en el bosque junto al río fue motivo de escándalo debido a que la figura femenina sentada en primer plano aparece desnuda.
Casi cien años Picasso estudia la obra del artista francés para trabajar el tema a su manera, tal y como había hecho con obras de otros artistas: Rembrandt, Cranach el Viejo, Poussin, Goya, Delacroix, Ingres y Velázquez, entre otros. En general, pinta reflexiones y sugerencias en relación a determinados cuadros.
La obra sería motivo de múltiples reinterpretaciones por parte de Picasso: más de 26 pinturas, 140 dibujos, grabados y cerámicas fueron creados a partir de esa escena costumbrista.
